The first 20 years of his career were almost entirely devoted to working in monochrome, producing a vast number of charcoal drawings and lithographs, and it was not until the late 1870s that he turned to cloud, mainly using pastels. From about 1900, inspired by microscopic structures of plants, Redon explored their artistic potential and developed a dreamlike quality, which is regarded as a precursor of the Surrealists. In his later years Redon also produced portraits that were a riot of color. A recluse who sunned the limelight, Redon nevertheless became a role model for the next generation of French artists.
